  1. A Few Key Facts:

    The Fine Art of Key Duplication starts with a Baldino’s locksmith. It takes a minimum of six to twelve months to train a key smith; that is, a person who just duplicates keys. They must master twelve types of machines, and learn how to manufacture keys from codes or from scratch. To go on to become a locksmith, it takes four years of training to include all facets of the industry. Due to the introduction of new products and newer electronics, the training is continuous. The locksmith must learn the alphabet of keys for over 1,000 duplicate blanks and be able to select without hesitation the correct one for use for each request.

  2. All Key Blanks Are Not Created Equal

    Key blanks are NOT created equally! The strength and quality of the key blank is critical, ensuring resistance to bending or cracking at stress points. A good quality key blank is necessary for accurate key duplication. Baldino’s knows this and a return visit to correct problems with your duplicate key(s) isn’t necessary because the job is done right the first time. Thinner is also NOT better! Home centers and hardware stores are able to charge less for key duplication simply because the key blanks used are thinner, and therefore susceptible to bending and/or breaking.

    In order to save money on brass and machinery to mill key blanks with exacting tolerances, many key manufactures mill the key blank to non manufacturer specifications. Due to thinner construction, the key blanks will insert into the lock but wobble in the keyway, causing the duplicated key to turn hard or stick, resulting in breakage.
